The National Emergencies Trust has recently published its Annual Report 2022/23 which highlights the work the charity is undertaking at speed to learn lessons from the past: both historic UK disasters and its own, inaugural Coronavirus Appeal.
The report outlines how the Trust is acting on insights gleaned from more than 120 emergency survivors and responders during its Consultation Phase in 2019, before the charity’s official launch in November that year. This includes:
- Bee the Difference – this research project in collaboration with young Manchester Arena attack survivors addresses the challenge that young voices too often feel overlooked and under-served during emergencies. Insights will improve outcomes for young people affected by terror in future.
- Survivor signposting – the Trust is working with its growing network to ensure that when the worst happens, survivors know where to turn to for support; a pressing issue in past emergencies. The Trust’s corporate Patrons and Ambassadors, and a new Appeal Partners programme, will all be able to play a vital supporting role.
- Ensuring no-one is left behind – a series of projects to build new networks or knowledge, build on learnings from the Trust’s £100m Coronavirus Appeal, as well as historic disasters, to address potential areas of unmet need during future emergencies. From mental health partnerships to the National Charitable Partners programme, they aim to make sure that no cause or community is left behind.
John Barradell, Chair of the National Emergencies Trust, said: “The insights from our Consultation Phase, as well as our first appeal, are directly informing how we prioritise our work between appeals and achieve better outcomes for those affected by future emergencies. Meanwhile, our membership of the UK Resilience Forum means we can build our networks and knowledge in a way that complements the UK’s wider disaster preparedness plans.”
